Macpherson asserts a series of key and influential propositions (publishing this essay a few years after the early success of his own “translations” and Sheridan’s successful British Education and Lectures on Elocution). He claims that the heroic poetry of Ossian is the product of a preliterate society, and is informed by pre-literacy at something like a subatomic level. The mnemonic (some would say soporific) rhythms and cadences of “Ossian’s” verse derive from an essential feature of any successful narrative verse within an oral tradition. Without an understanding of oratorical technique, therefore, the beauties of the poem are inconceivable. Similarly, the practice of bardic recitation enhances the skills of oratory since the poetry is deliberately constructed to support the natural cadencing of speech. Paradoxically then, writing is not the natural preserver of poetry, but is instead a distorting influence, one that contributes to its real decay. Poetry that has to be remembered and reproduced by oral tradition has to stay close to a version of natural expression. The very survival of Ossian therefore stands as testimony to a continuity of emotional authenticity that resonates trans historically and cross culturally.

Clare O’Halloran has noted the significance of the reaction to Macpherson in mid-century Ireland. She remarks how the pioneering antiquary Charles O’Conor labored in the wake of Macpherson’s celebrity to assert that Ireland’s primitive identity (libeled and insulted in Macpherson’s footnotes) was linked not to a preliterate Homeric community but to the earliest use of alphabetic letters in the world, by the Phoenicians: “In the clash with Macpherson, O’Conor’s case was undermined both directly and indirectly by the former’s insistence on and proud boast of, a purely oral Scots gaelic culture. It is interesting that the skeptical public reaction to O’Conor’s claim of an early literate civilization and to Macpherson’s defence of the Ossian poems against forgery charges was the same: that they should produce the manuscript evidence.”36 While clashing with Macpherson, O’Conor benefited from the fact that his Scottish counterpart had created a climate of opinion receptive to a debate about national origins in which the use of language was central. Notably, O’Conor was encouraged by Samuel Johnson, the most famous of all of Macpherson’s enemies. Johnson believed that O’Conor had both the skills and the responsibility to establish what would have been, in effect, a department of comparative Celtic literature at Trinity College Dublin, an environment where the origins, affinities, and influences linking Welsh, Irish, Cornish, and Breton might be discussed. As O’Halloran points out, however, even those who believed in tracing oral tradition rather than moldy manuscripts, believed that these debates needed textual evidence to underpin them. What Boswell recorded at the house of the Sheridans in London was, meanwhile a dramatic definition of authenticity. Deployed as a touchstone of their guests’ sensibility, Ossian functioned not merely as a sublime poem but, of course, as a touchstone of a sublime reading of a poem from one of the great tragic actors of the day, and therefore of Sheridan himself.
